Overview

This song is two halves, both of which are pretty powerful. The first part is highly ascriptive. It ascribes to God the worthiness of our absolute best worship. The second part is committal. It commits life to the foundational nature of God’s supremacy, grace, and love.

Keys

Unless you have natural tenors in your worship band, the key of G is a highly untenable option. Even so, the majority of the men in your congregation are going to sing it a highly unexciting octave down. Women may be comfortable, depending on their own personal ranges.

Scaling for male singers, C is a good comfortable range in which to sing while still supporting the song with some energy. D is better, if not a slightly awkward key in which to play.

Use in Worship

This is a great fourth song in a good set. Its use of both ascription and commitment are great material to use for a church that has, as much as possible, moved into genuine worship.

As a song of commitment, it would be good to start at the bridge.

Scriptural Basis

The first half of the song rests comfortably in Psalm 96:7-9

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering, and come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;
    tremble before him, all the earth! (ESV)

And for the second half of the song, we recall the old Sunday School song about where the foolish and wise men built their homes. The sourcing is Matthew 7:24-27…

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (ESV)

Lyrics

Worthy of every song we could ever sing.
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring.
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe.
We live for you.

Jesus the name above every other name.
Jesus the only one who could save.
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe.
We live for you.
Oh we live for you.

Holy there is no one like you
There is none besides you
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who you are and fill me
With your heart and lead me
In love to those around me.

And I will build my life upon your love it is a firm foundation.
And I will put my trust in you alone and I will not be shaken.
