What if Lincoln…

“Fondly do we hope and fervently do we pray that this mighty scourge of  war may speedily pass away.  Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsmans two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the judgments of the lord are true and righteous altogether.” -Abraham Lincoln March 4, 1965

Dear Us,

The Syrians are coming.

They are swimming, boating, bribing, donkeying, raiding, invading, and fleeing. An evil that you and I cannot imagine nips at their heels and given an open border into Europe, and several closed, they escape their hell and bring calamity.

For the first time in a half a century, an entire continent is caught up in the struggle of what to do with evil so intense and so complete that it completely ignores the humanity of those it seeks to crush.

And burn

And crucify

And drown

And behead

And enslave

And rape

World agencies are silent. Europe is silent. The rest of the Arab world, once the furor over the death of their own people has cooled, is silent. Some have loudly cried out. Still handfuls of others have gone to assist those besieged. But those in executive command of whole militates and governances, people who advocate for the little guy, the persecuted and the downtrodden have gravely posed their faces for the camera and mourned all of those already lost in needless combat in the Middle East.

The price is too high.

This is an Arab problem.

I have an election coming up.

They’re fighting our enemy’s proxy.

The time to decisively end the suffering of these people at a relatively cheap expense is over. They now come to our borders and immigration services with wide eyes and immolated hearts, ashen remains of what was once their humanity.

And hidden amongst them, wearing their practiced face of suffering, our enemy.

And just so we’re clear, the first person who votes to deny the victims of this genocide asylum because of  the plague rats that follow in their wake will definitely be popular. He will also deserve the poultry status that he receives from those of us blue in the face with shouting for action. Chicken…

We had the chance to go fight evil. But now we must stand and fight it. In the coming months as our cities fill with the desperate, our news services will thrill us with our own benevolence for a week and then nothing. Maybe we have someone murdered by a refugee and a strong xenophobic anti refugee movement that will serve for political theatre for a day, inspiration for a week, and then more silence.

But they will still be here. People who have gazed in horror into the Pandora’s box of human degradation and misery. People who know the end of man and his inability to be both godless and good.

But their tormentors aren’t godless right? They have religion.

Either you’re right and this is about a religion we need to take another look at, or you’re not and the godlessness is their best descriptor. We cannot dehumanize them because Isis is us. They are people. We are no better, atomically speaking. Maybe my atoms are more enlightened because they were mainly gathered in the West. But mostly I tell you this is what happens when people ignore the fundamental idea of mankind as the bearer of the image of God. We must love that image. Even if the wearer is dynamically different from us.

So they’re here. In our schools, on our blocks, at our churches, in our dmv, waiting at Home Depot for work, in Walmart, on Facebook. Shall we politely ignore them to not draw attention to their agony? Shall we suspect them of being potential stowaways for a dramatic newsworthy attack? This person is literally my neighbor. What should I do, even and especially if that fact unsettles me?

What cost should I now shoulder for a people left maimed in my way?

I didn’t go to Iraq to fight for the yazeedes.

I wrote my congressmen and my president.

I showed solidarity with my Facebook profile picture.

I did nothing.

What price does my family now pay for my and my countrymen and their activity? And know there are some spooks and operators who have done something. Our nation doesn’t deserve you. We must Bernard to form relationships with our new American stowaways.

So we can heal their wounds.

So they can remind us to live.

So we can spot the charlatans.

So our nation might remain free.

I accept the new neighbors. God, help us. It’s going to get rough.
